The client collects Ray Guns from the 50's and 60's. That formed the basis of the design concept. The original brief called for color, quirky, fun, and relaxed.
We chose a bright red modern chaise sofa, and painted the opposite wall the same red, leaving all other walls white. The red sofa "talks" to the adjacent red wall.
The loft has an undulating industrial ceiling, which we painted white too. The red wall being perpendicular to the curves, highlights the undulation of the ceiling. With the simple gesture of paint, the space became much more sculptural in feeling.
The Ray Gun collection was treated like a gallery installation, hung on the red wall. The Ray Guns, mostly silver with primary colored details, become animated against the red wall. Underneath the "exhibit" we placed a vintage Italian sofa, which was recovered in silver gray Knoll boucle to complement the color of the guns. The loft was given a modern current feel with new lighting fixtures, and furnishings. We chose a rug that fit their criteria; lots of color in a free form Swirl stripe from the Rug Company, which lent a sort space age air to the place befitting the project.
