This project mixes Asian and Western influences, with a use of modern everyday materials to create forms or surfaces. The house itself is based on a poolhouse concept, small and compact, with reduced geometries. We used high tech materials to give a twist to traditions. One whole side of the house was constructed using a material called Kalwall, a fiberglass building material, which lets in diffused light. And gives the effect of a modern high tech shoji screen from the interiors. Another twist was the use of a modern material, PVC pipe as "columns" for low cost and maintenance.
The fireplace is constructed of Portland cement, with large terra cotta cylinders for the flue. It's the focus of the living room interior, centered within the shoji wall. A large ottoman, covered in a woven basketweave treated paper fabric, looks like a floating tatami mat. We designed a very slim Parsons kitchen table made for the house, as well as linear metal bed frames in the upstairs bedroom. Outside, there is a modern version of a Japanese stone garden with pea gravel with a wall of bamboo for privacy.
